Copy mode: a bronzeFill story

In the south of the Netherlands and neighboring regions we have the carnaval tradition. Worldwide known for the Brazilian variety, the version known to us is a different affair. It is an annual festival, celebrated widely, of Catholic origin in which people go wild and party one more time before Lent. It is a tradition chiseled into the fabric of society. It features mocking of establishment amongst other things, represented by clowns, demons and jesters.

The original statue

A local carnaval society needed a copy of a statue they use annually. The best way we found was to scan it, print it with bronzeFill and post-process it.

The scanning was done by local specialists at Hagenaars. This engineering company from nearby Roermond was founded in 1994 and specializes in 3D scanning solutions, amongst other things. They bought the first FARO laser scanning equipment in 2007 and this meant that 3D scanning and measuring became the main focus of this small family owned company. Their engineering background gives them an advantage over competitors since their customer base is more technical minded. You can visit their website here (Dutch only) and give some specific attention to their project page.

Scanning in progress…

With the .stl file generated we went to work and printed a copy on the Ultimaker 2+. (Before you ask, we are not allowed to share the .stl) Settings used:

Layer Height: 0.2mm
Speed: 30mm/s
Temperature: 215C
Material Flow: 106%

After that, the crucial phase of post-processing commenced.

The model was first sanded and polished. After that, we post-processed (and give it the old patina look) by using a mixture of salt, vinegar and ammonia. To achieve accelerated aging, add salt to the vinegar until the salt does not dissolve anymore and the vinegar is saturated. The Lulzbot team already did an extensive blog about this, which you can read here.

Post-processing these kind of prints require a lot of work and effort, but the results are rewarding and quite good, if we say so ourselves and the model aged quite nicely.

bronzeFill was our first truly special filament, launched over 3 years ago and still one of our most popular filaments. The added weight and unique aesthetic properties have made this an extremely popular material. Last year we published quite a bit about bronzeFill,  like the enormous Octolamp, the museum worthy Greek helmet and the stellar fountain pen.

If you want to have more information on how to print with bronzeFill, visit our handy tutorial: How to print with bronzeFill

If you are looking for more tips and advice regarding post-processing bronzeFill and our other metal filled filaments, we have a nice collection of articles collected on our site.

Interested in bronzeFill? It is readily available in our webshop as 750 grams and 1500 grams spools.

Traffic Light

Today’s print is a multi-material print since we like to mix up the filaments we have in our ever expanding portfolio. Our intern Sven Hacken went to work and designed a fully functional traffic light!

Design by Sven Hacken / CLOUD3D: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2826057

And the funny thing is: it works like a charm!

All parts were made on the Ultimaker 2, 2+ and 3. Below is a listing of the materials and settings we used:

[table id=13 /]

The variety of materials used is exemplary of the work Sven is doing in our print lab. Material of choice for the opaque, rigid parts was PLA Economy. For the transparent parts the obvious choice was our new line of transparent nGen colors and even nGen_FLEX was needed for the base feet.

For the light inside, Sven used a USB camping light (link here).

We recently added 6 new transparent colors to our portfolio of nGen filaments:

These six are added to a rich mix of 17 colors, bringing the total to 23 colors of nGen filament you can choose from as from today! With nGen Transparent colors you can print objects that have a great shine and stand out from the crowd, even from far away. With the right settings you can even print translucent objects to a degree as you can see!

nGen is a true all-round material suitable for most day to day 3D printing activities. At the core of its reliability is the special chemical make-up of the Eastman Amphora™ AM3300 3D polymer, which results in a good melt stability. From pellet to filament to 3D print, nGen retains its material properties very well, meaning more stable results with less waste of time and material.

PLA Economy is a fantastic PLA grade which we launched in November 2016. Initially we released four colors: white, red, black and silver. In 2017 we added the always popular Dark Blue, which is similar to our very own Ultra Marine Blue that we offer in our portfolio of PLA/PHA filaments.

PLA Economy offers a great value for your money. One spool consists of 2.2kg of filament for a dirt cheap price of a little over € 35 (ex VAT and shipping). It is a different grade than our range of PLA/PHA, but we guarantee the same colorFabb quality. Our filaments are readily available from our webshop.

The small feet on the bottom were printed with nGen_FLEX. nGen_FLEX was our very first step into flexible filaments. Our main focus before had been rigid and stiff materials, but we found that we should add a functional filament to our portfolio that met the needs of our users. Our co-operation with Eastman Chemical Company has lead to the release in the fall of 2016 of nGen_FLEX – made with Eastman Amphora FL6000.

nGen_FLEX is a semi-flexible filament with a Shore A hardness of 95. This enables users with the Bowden tube printer (like Ultimakers, for instance) to print with this filament without an effort. Of course the user can influence how flexible a print should feel by adjusting infill and perimeter settings. nGen_FLEX is temperature resistant to about 130C. That means 3D printed objects can be steam sterilized at 121C which is a great asset for medical / laboratory environments.
You can read more in our recent blog post where we revisited nGen_FLEX.

Candy dispenser

First world problems arose at the office when candy was lying around freely. First world solutions were found by printing a candy dispenser. Of course it has to stand out anywhere and we just so happened to have the right filament for the job: nGen_LUX

Original design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2636622 (no candy included)

Originally designed by HelioxLab, we found it necessary to adjust the reservoir a bit to contain more candy. Because more is always better when candy is involved [citation needed] . For the most parts we used nGen_LUX and for the reservoir regular nGen Clear. All parts were printed on the Ultimaker 2+. The settings used were:

Layerheight: All parts except reservoir were printed at 0.2mm – which already results in a stunning surface quality with nGen_LUX. The reservoir was printed at 0.5mm and with 150% material flow. For the print speed we used the standard nGen speed for the nGen_LUX parts and once again the reservois was the exception; we used 75% of the standard nGen speed for that one.

Printing temperatures were uniform for the entire print. Printing at 240⁰C with the print bed at a comfortable 75⁰C

Yes, printed at 0.2mm layer height.

We used three of five nGen_LUX colors currently available: Star Yellow, Nature Green and Regal Violet.

nGen_LUX is a unique development based on our best-selling co-polyester nGen, made with Eastman Amphora AM3300 3d Polymer. The excellent clarity of the base AM3300 makes this material uniquely suited for the extremely rare pigment used in nGen_LUX. The material uses diffuse reflection to scatter light in all directions. For the eye it’s nearly impossible to spot layering, even at 0.2mm layerheight. nGen_LUX allows users to print visually appealing models without the need of post processing. nGen_LUX features all the characteristics of our regular nGen, good chemical stability, elevated temperature resistance (85C) and thus allows users to print creations that are functional, durable, efficient and attractive.

It is now available in 5 awesome colors:

nGen_LUX is our new standard in how a 3D printed object can look. It is the filament for the users who wants to bring something extraordinary their work. It is the filament that needs to give that added value. The “Lux” not only stands for luxurious – which is definitely the look of the prints – but also refers to the unit of illumination used worldwide. And light is what makes this filament truly special. Believe us when we say that the photos don’t do the prints real justice…

nGen_LUX is the first special filament based on nGen and the second one in our range of co-polyesters after XT-CF20, our carbon fibre enforced filament based on colorFabb_XT. It can be printed with the very same settings as nGen.

Another very cool print we made recently with nGen_LUX is Project Unicorn. Click the image below for the story behind that print!

Robotics

It is a well established fact by now that our new PA-CF Low Warp filament is all about functionality. We developed this filament with only one goal: to make sure a lot of users have the ability to print high quality printed parts. Even on a cold bed. In the past weeks we have already shown quite a few prints and their respective qualities (listed below). Another great application for PA-CF Low Warp is the field of robotics and we printed a few parts to show:

Designs:

The prints above have been designed for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) which just kicked off its 2018 season again. You can find a full collection of designs that have been made in the past for the FRC here.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organisation aimed to encourage young people to become science and technology leaders and you should definitely check out their website.

PA-CF Low Warp is, due to its stiffness and strength, a perfect material for robotics and its much needed custom made parts. In that regard it is not that different from the application of this filament for drone parts, about which we wrote last week.

The parts were all printed on our Ultimaker 2+ in our print lab, equipped with 0.4mm Olsson Ruby nozzles. We printed at 260C and a 50C bed. Due to its abrasive nature, the Olsson Ruby nozzles ensure that print quality remains the same for many, many hours and days of printing.

As the name indicates, PA-CF Low Warp is a polyamide (nylon) with carbon fiber. An added bonus is that, unlike many other engineering grade filaments, it has very little warping when printing large objects! Low infill prints come out perfectly flat on cold bed for higher infill prints 40/50C temperature is enough to obtain flat prints. It is an engineering grade filament for a wide range of printers and users alike. You can find more information on our dedicated landing page.

In recent weeks we have printed a lot with PA-CF Low Warp. Below are a few examples:

The PA-CF Low Warp filament is a one of a kind polyamide formulation with the ability to print nearly warp free on non heated buildplatforms. Low infill prints come out perfectly flat on cold bed for higher infill prints 40/50C temperature is enough to obtain flat prints.

PA-CF Low Warp allows continuous use at 120°C while retaining sufficient properties for the intended application. Most high heat resistant materials will be difficult to print and require heated chambers and / or heated platforms to keep parts from warping the bottom layer. PA-CF Low Warp shows a very low tendency to warp, even at ambient temperature platform.

Eager to get started? Click here to get the basics on how to print with PA_CF Low Warp.

PA-CF Low Warp is available now in our webshop and ships from stock. We currently stock spools of 700 grams, but as from late next week large spools containing 2kg of material will be available as well.

You can also opt to get a unique bundle package, containing one spool of PA-CF Low Warp and the Olsson Ruby Nozzle 0.4mm in our webshop.

Housing

3D printing is uniquely suitable for customizing parts that one needs on the fly. A custom housing, for instance. The original design by Printcontrol was made to be a housing for electronics, but you can use it as a housing in general. We chose our new PA-CF Low Warp filament to print for extra stiffness and toughness.

Original design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:243905

And the matte finish just gives it a very cool and industrial look. We printed on the Ultimaker 2+, using the Olsson Ruby nozzle. Print temperature at 260C and a 50C bed. Layer height is 0.3mm.

In general it can be used for functional prototyping and final part manufacturing. For functional prototyping users are often looking for materials which have good toughness, strength and resistance to abrasion. Because of the excellent mechanical strength and heat resistance het material can even be considers for use in final applications. PA-CF low warp has great dimensional stability, because of extremely low warp. The material is therefor unique suited for applications such as jigs & fixtures which require parts with accurate dimensions.

The Olsson Ruby Nozzle – One nozzle for all materials

Due to the abrassive nature of the filament we recommend the use of hardened nozzles for the best performance of the material and printer. For this reason we are offering the Olsson Ruby Nozzles with the purchase of PA-CF Low Warp. You can find the combined offer here.

We have published about the use of the Olsson Ruby Nozzle before and we are very enthusiastic about the use of this filament combined with abrassive materials like PA-CF Low Warp, but also XT-CF20 and steelFill.

The ruby mounted at the tip assures that even the toughest materials will be printable. It was originally designed for printing with a composite of Boron Carbide (B4C), the third hardest known material in the world. Since most of the Olsson Ruby is made from brass, with its excellent heat conductivity, performance and throughput is first-class.

The Olsson Ruby is manufactured, assembled and tested in a high-quality facility in Sweden. This is why 3DVerkstan – also colorFabb’s partner in the region – guarantees the very best quality and tolerances.

As from now you can purchase the Olsson Ruby Nozzle 0.4mm in combination with PA-CF Low Warp in our webshop.

Router attachment

Recently we released PA-CF Low Warp. This is a filament developed with one single purpose and that’s to create functional prints on a wide range of 3D printers. For today’s print we move further into the DIY world by printing a router attachment for a rotary tool, the Dremel in this case.

Original design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17105

Designed by Lenbok, we printed this part of the Ultimaker 2+ with a 0.8mm Olsson Ruby nozzle. We chose 0.2mm layer height and printed at 260C nozzle temp. As the designer says on his Thingiverse page: “Screw this puppy onto your dremel, adjust your bit depth, and route away to your heart’s content.”

Gimbal

Another aspect where PA-CF Low Warp in excels is the fact that it is light weight, but tough. It is therefore an excellent material for drones for example where weight and strength matter. Today’s featured print is the Open Brushless Gimbal by turbi.

Original design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:110731

The recently released high quality engineering filament is an excellent material for these type of demanding applications.

In the example we used printed motors instead of real brushless motors. The frame of the gimball is printed using PA-CF Low Warp on the Ultimaker 2+ with a 0.4mm Olsson Ruby nozzle, using 0.2mm layerheight. It was printed at 260C with 50C bed temp.

It  is the first result of the cooperation between LEHVOSS group and colorFabb. Both companies share the vision to develop high strength engineering materials, without compromising on printability.   Together with LEHVOSS colorFabb created a custom formulation which is optimized for the production of high quality filament and achieving the best possible 3D printing characteristics. PA-CF Low Warp is the first PA based filament released by colorFabb and only released now because it doesn’t compromise on printability. The very low warp characteristic of this material is a truly unique feature of this PA material and allows many users to process nylon material on standard desktop FFF 3D printers.

Most high heat resistant materials will be difficult to print and require heated chambers and / or heated platforms to keep parts from warping the bottom layer. PA-CF Low Warp shows a very low tendency to warp, even at ambient temperature platform.

As can be seen with this example for drone parts, users can now print high strength material without the need of heated chambers. The materials shows very good results for 3D printed specimens compared to injection molded data, with only minimal loss in performance. This is a result of the excellent printability of the material, enabling users to acquire optimal performance on desktop FFF 3d printers.

Feeder Bracket

Our recently released PA_CF Low Warp is a great material for making printed modifications for 3D printers. We printed the Rear Mount Feeder Bracket for the Ultimaker 2 with our new filament:

The design was made by Christopher Bray and can be downloaded here.

We printed this part on the Ultimaker 2+ with a 0.8mm Olsson Ruby nozzle 0.2mm layerheight and 260C nozzle temp. Of course this is not the only part that can be printed with our new functional filament: Fan mounts, motor mounts, extruder carriage, gears, etc. are all possibilities.

PA-CF Low Warp was released in the week before Christmas. It is our first foray into nylon based materials. The formulation has been modified to reduce the uptake of moisture by half compared to PA6 and it also takes about 4 times longer to reach the saturation point. This makes PA-CF Low Warp less sensitive to moisture then most other nylon filaments available in the market.

You can find more information about the printability of PA-CF Low Warp on our dedicated landing page.

Garden Sprinkler

January 10th: Updated with images of the finished part

This is a print we have made before and one that is an excellent example of how well overhangs are handled with PA-CF Low Warp, our new nylon based carbon re-inforced engineering filament. The Garden Sprinkler by Daniel Norée is a great design to showcase our filament with.

Design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2077154

We scaled the sprinkler to 200% scale to show the awesome ability to print overhangs. Not only does this high-end filament print very well on a wide range of printers (find out how to print), but it shows excellent properties like strength, low warp and also overhangs. Only this morning we featured the ability to have great looking prints and with the ability to print challenging overhangs we know we have released a filament that is perfectly suitable for the professional user who needs a high quality filament that performs!

We printed similar to previous posts on the Ultimaker 2+ using an Olsson Ruby nozzle. Print settings used were 260C hot end temperature with a 50 degrees C bed temp and at 0.3mm layer height.  Fan cooling is set to 70% and used 80% of the original speed, this gives plenty of time for cooling and results in very crisp overhang geometries.

Daniel Norée is well known for his Open RC project (where we printed a large version of his F1 design), but he has more than 120 designs on Thingiverse – under his handle barspin – very functional and cool ones among them.

Single Gauge Pod

Our brand new PA-CF Low Warp filament is all about functionality. That means it also has to look Good (yes, that is a capital G). It is a perfect material to make parts that are used in an industrial environment, like the Single Gauge Pod by oldmatedave:

Design by oldmatedave: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1832214

We printed, similar to prints we posted about yesterday, on the Ultimaker 2+ using an Olsson Ruby nozzle. Print settings used were 260C hot end temperature with a 50 degrees C bed temp and at 0.3mm layer height. If you want to know more about printing with PA-CF Low Warp, click here.
